Kahoot! is an engaging formative assessment tool that is game based. Teachers create a series of multiple choice questions and students respond to these using their own devices or school provided devices. Teachers can add videos, images and diagrams to questions. Kahoot works best in a class setting with a shared screen such as a Smartboard or Smart TV.
This tool would be excellent for review at the end of a unit or to assess student progress to inform future instruction. Either way, it's a lot of fun! |
Flubaroo is a tool that works with Google Forms. Flubaroo can be set up to automatically grade quizzes created on Forms. To do this, Flubaroo must be installed as an Add-On in your Google Drive. Once that is done, the following steps will allow you to automatically grade assignments:

Verso is a website that can be utilized on multiple platforms with the goal of fostering online communication and collaboration amongst students, while at the same time providing the teacher with a means of identifying the needs of the students through formative assessment. It is a place where teachers can post videos, questions, documents, and links to other websites for their students to view. Once they view the content, the students then answer a question about or respond in some way to the material they just viewed. They cannot look at any other responses from the class until they have posted their own comment, and the responses are all anonymous; only the teacher can see who posts each answer. Students can then respond to each other’s comments as an additional step to the assignment if deemed necessary.
Verso aims to create a “community” by enabling teachers to host online forums for discussion. Collaboration comes into play as students comment on each other’s work. Students will also be alerted when someone has commented on their work. If a student makes a helpful or insightful comment, the teacher (or even another student) can “like” it. Conversely, if a student makes an inappropriate comment, the teacher or the student receiving the comment can flag it. This notifies the teacher and student, and will hopefully encourage the class to avoid inappropriate behavior. This may be a useful tool for providing the students with an exit ticket at the end of class, too. As the period is ending, students can go online and view the final question, and then post their answer. The teacher can then use these responses as a bridge to the next activity or as a means of assessing what the students still need. It could also provide the homework assignment for the lesson, with the added feature of allowing students to comment on each other’s work once they have completed the assignment themselves. This appears to be similar to Google classroom, but has the nice feature of anonymity. Even though the teacher can view each student’s comments, the students themselves do not have to worry about the pressure of being judged by their classmates. |
Engage, assess and personalize your class with the Socrative app and/or website. Teachers can initiate formative assessments through quizzes, quick question polls, exit tickets and space races all with their Socrative Teacher app. The site will instantly grade, aggregate and provide visuals of results to help you identify opportunities for further instruction. There is a multitude of ways to incorporate Socrative into the classroom. You can use this with students individually or with cooperative groups. Provide students with multiple choice questions, true/false questions, or short answer questions. See responses in real time and post answers in class for others to see, if desired. Other activities include quizzes, “space races” and exit tickets that students respond to while using this website or app in class during the lesson. The app also provides results and reports for any activity you have students participate in.
You will be able to utilize everything you need to get students engaged in a Socrative lesson in order to have them respond digitally by using the free version of the app. In the free version, you will have access to one “room” that can allow for up to 150 students. However, the app does offer a “pro” version that requires payment which will allow you to create multiple rooms for different classes or sections. It’s easy to get started using Socrative. You just register for a Socrative Teacher account. This account will work with other Socrative Apps and via all browsers at Socrative.com. Students can connect to your room(s) by opening their apps or joining your room at Socrative.com on any device once you provide them with the password. |

Study Ladder is for grades K-6, but could also be used for older students in need of remediation. Teachers can set up their classes and assign students review and practice; it is a great tool for formative assessment, much like Castle Learning. Student progress is easily monitored. Assignments can be differentiated for the students or they can use Study Ladder independently for practice. Students can navigate backwards within a course if work becomes too challenging, or they can move forward if they have mastered a skill. Tutorials and videos are provided to assist in learning concepts. Slideshows, evaluations and tests, and printable resources are also available. Study Ladder is free to teachers; students can access free during school hours with limited homework access of three activities per day after the trial period. Parents can choose to upgrade, but it doesn't appear necessary.
Subjects include art, math, health, language arts, literacy, music, science, reading, and writing. |
